An Annotated Bibliography for Movies: “Stranger Things” and “The Body”
The movies that I chose so far for this paper were based on a few criteria. First, they had to serve directly as an inspiration for Stranger Things, as referenced in interviews or in Worlds Turned Upside Down. Next, I chose films that were referenced in one or more secondary source on gender and the horror genre. Finally, I watched movies that had a “modern” remake or at the very least an equivalent from the last fifteen years, so that I could compare the original with a similar text from the same era in which the Duffers created their show.
Girls Just Wanna Have Bloodbaths
I started with Carrie (1976) and Carrie (2013). The original film is not only based on Stephen King’s first published novel, but also the first time his work was adapted for screen. King is a major inspiration for the Duffers, and his work will come up again in this paper. The 1976 film was directed, produced, written, and edited by a team of straight white men. The remake was directed by Kimberly Peirce and adapted by GLAAD media award winning screen/playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. These differences are very important for how female bodies are represented and treated in the two films.
